ROAS Is a Metric, Not a Business Model

ROAS shows attributed revenue for each unit of advertising spend. It helps you compare campaign efficiency, but it does not tell you how much money remains after product costs, fulfilment and the other expenses of a sale.

Answer in brief

ROAS shows attributed revenue for each unit of advertising spend. It helps you compare campaign efficiency, but it does not tell you how much money remains after product costs, fulfilment and the other expenses of a sale.

Start with contribution

Before you set an advertising target, identify the revenue a sale brings in and the variable costs needed to deliver it. Keep refunds and cancellations inside a consistent revenue definition. The amount left before advertising is the contribution available to cover acquisition and fixed costs.

A simple illustrative comparison

Suppose a campaign spends 1,000 and receives credit for 4,000 in sales. ROAS is 4x. If the sales leave 1,200 after product and variable delivery costs, only 200 remains after advertising. A second campaign with the same ROAS can have a different contribution because its products or delivery costs differ. These figures illustrate the relationship; they are not an industry benchmark.

Keep attribution consistent

Record the attribution window and reporting source beside the ratio. A platform report and an order system may credit sales differently. Do not add several channel reports together unless you have addressed overlapping credit. When comparing campaigns, use the same revenue treatment and observation period.

Choose the budget decision

Review contribution after ads, lead or order quality, and the time required to receive cash. A strong ratio on a small campaign does not prove that a larger budget will produce the same return. Increase budget as a test with a clear observation period rather than a conclusion drawn from one number.

Use the right calculation

Use ROAS for attributed revenue divided by ad spend. Use a margin calculation to understand the portion of revenue left after the costs you enter. If you use a return-on-investment calculation, state whether its return input represents revenue or contribution. Keep these definitions in the campaign report so the next reviewer can reproduce your decision.
