Machining Units and the Setup Record

Keep feed, speed, diameter and engagement conventions attached to the calculation.

Working reference

Keep feed, speed, diameter and engagement conventions attached to the calculation.

State the units before converting

For metric milling, cutting speed in metres per minute equals pi times diameter in millimetres times rpm divided by 1,000. A 10 mm cutter at 6,000 rpm has a surface speed of approximately 188.50 m/min. Omitting the conversion factor produces a number in millimetres per minute instead.

Distinguish feed conventions

Feed per minute equals rpm times flute count times feed per tooth when the stated relationship applies. At 6,000 rpm, four flutes and 0.05 mm per tooth, feed is 1,200 mm/min. Feed per revolution and feed per tooth differ by the flute count; neither should be entered as the other without a conversion.

Record engagement and process limits

Radial chip-thinning corrections depend on peripheral engagement geometry. The correction is not a recommendation to raise feed without limit. Cutter shape, runout, material, machine acceleration, workholding and chip evacuation remain part of the process. Obtain starting data from the applicable tooling documentation rather than a generic material label.

Keep a reproducible setup sheet

Record tool identifier, diameter, flutes, material, coolant, engagement, depth, spindle speed and programmed feed. Add the reason for each change after a trial. A calculator converts assumptions; it does not certify the setup or predict every failure mode. Review the machine and tool limits before transferring a result into the programme.

CONTENT AND CORRECTIONS

Martzine Editorial Team

Martzine’s editorial work is led by Bilal Ahmad, founder of Martzine, with support from his team across content, research and technical development. Team members contribute according to the subject and assigned work, from practical explanations and source research to tool functionality and website improvements.

Martzine publishes and maintains the tools, calculators, references, resources and articles on this website. Our editorial work covers clear instructions, calculation assumptions, useful sources and corrections when an issue is identified.

A result depends on the inputs and the limits described on its page. If you notice a calculation error, broken feature, unclear explanation or information that needs correction, please send us the page link, the details and any supporting reference. We will assess the report and correct confirmed issues as soon as practical.
