Record the Convention Behind a Conversion

Keep units, date rules and rounding visible when a result is shared.

Working reference

Keep units, date rules and rounding visible when a result is shared.

Start with the source definition

A useful conversion begins with what the value represents. An elapsed calendar-day difference is not a count of working days. A UTC offset is not a complete time-zone rule. A percentage has a base, while a ratio may be expressed as a multiplier or as two reduced integers.

Check one small example

Two hours and 30 minutes correspond to 2.5 decimal hours because 30 minutes is half an hour. Writing 2.30 treats the minutes as hundredths and changes the duration. Keep the original hours and minutes in the record before converting them for billing or reporting.

Record precision and boundaries

Rounding to a useful display precision may hide a small difference. Whole-item ordering and staffing can require upward rounding even when a geometric or financial result allows fractions. For approximate decimal-to-fraction conversion, record the bounded denominator; the displayed fraction may be an approximation rather than an exact representation.

Preserve the receiving convention

Before copying a result, confirm whether the receiving sheet or application expects percentages, fractions, decimal hours or a specific date format. A successful local conversion cannot select that convention on the receiver’s behalf. Save the source, method, output and intended destination together to make later discrepancies traceable.

CONTENT AND CORRECTIONS

Martzine Editorial Team

Martzine’s editorial work is led by Bilal Ahmad, founder of Martzine, with support from his team across content, research and technical development. Team members contribute according to the subject and assigned work, from practical explanations and source research to tool functionality and website improvements.

Martzine publishes and maintains the tools, calculators, references, resources and articles on this website. Our editorial work covers clear instructions, calculation assumptions, useful sources and corrections when an issue is identified.

A result depends on the inputs and the limits described on its page. If you notice a calculation error, broken feature, unclear explanation or information that needs correction, please send us the page link, the details and any supporting reference. We will assess the report and correct confirmed issues as soon as practical.
